New Year’s Resolutions for a Comfier Home

Join a gym. Quit smoking. Volunteer.
New year, same resolutions!
Truth is, you don’t need to venture far for a good New Year’s resolution. In fact, you don’t need to leave the house at all! You can find plenty right at home.
Out With the Old, in With the New
Everyone loves the idea of a fresh start. And given how much time you spend at home, this is the perfect place to make some changes. Here are some classic New Year’s resolutions with a home comfort twist:
1. Save Money—Make Your Home More Energy Efficient
Wasting energy in your home is like throwing money out the window. Only it’s worse because you don’t know how much money you’re actually losing!
Not sure where to start? You can save energy in a number of ways, including:
- Shutting off the lights whenever you leave a room.
- Using a programmable thermostat. With this upgrade, you can heat and cool your home only when you’re there—and save money when you aren’t!
- Replacing your HVAC equipment when it’s outdated and inefficient. If you need to schedule heating repair frequently in Littlerock, CA, Lancaster, CA, or elsewhere in the Antelope Valley, it might be better to part ways with your system. Learn more about when it’s time to replace your heater.
- Caulking and sealing drafts to preserve warm air in the winter and cool air in the summer.
2. Be Healthier—Improve Your Indoor Air Quality
The new year can feel like the start of a new journey. All the more reason why you should leave pet dander, pollen and dust mites…well…in the dust!
Improving your home’s indoor air quality is a great way to feel better and live healthier. Our team at DS can help you find relief from your allergy symptoms once and for all. Removing all the debris and allergens also will allow your HVAC equipment to run more efficiently. Why not kick off your fresh start with a breath of fresh air?
3. Spend More Time With Family—DIY Projects Around the House
Sometimes the best days are spent doing a whole lot of nothing with friends and family. But if there are things you’d like to get done around the house, you can turn ordinary work into family activities.
Landscaping and painting are just some of the jobs you can tackle together. You can even split into teams and get some friendly competition going. Whatever your end goals are, DIY projects are a great way to build a better home and have fun doing it.
4. Choose Better Habits—Make Your Home Safer
Smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors save lives. That being said, you need to make sure they’re working properly. Test each detector in your home on a monthly basis and check the batteries every six months. You should install new batteries in each unit once per year. Also, make sure that you have both a smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector on every floor of your home.
5. Exercise More—Take Better Care of Your Home Equipment
Why do laps around the neighborhood when there’s so much you can do at home? Change the air filter in your HVAC system and make this part of your monthly regimen.
Also, be sure to schedule a maintenance tune-up at the start of each season. This is the best way to ensure your heating and cooling systems will run efficiently, safely and reliably. Annual inspections also prolong your system’s life and significantly reduce the chances for expensive repair work.
You might not realize it, but taking care of your home equipment also has its health benefits. Routine maintenance removes harmful debris that can clog your HVAC equipment and pollute your indoor air. Start the new year on a positive note and watch how a little TLC for your heating and cooling systems can make all the difference for your health, comfort and finances!
